Wow. Being a Dad, what an adventure! It's Saturday morning for me, this is one of the quietest times I have. A good time to sit, think, reflect. I'm older now, kids are grown, married, they have their own adventures ahead of them. I wonder if I was (and still am) a good Dad? What does that even mean? It probably has a different definition depending on who you ask. This week I have a biblical Dad story that I hope is both interesting and brings out these characteristics.
I think Dad's are different. They even start out different. Mom's spend every second with baby for that first 9 months. The feel the movement, the emotions, the change to both them and their little guy or gal. Dads are really just on the sidelines until the delivery. Then we're hit with that moment of "reality" the first time you get to hold this new moving, stretching, screaming, breathing bundle a nurse hands you. Suddenly you know that everything you ever thought you knew has forever changed. And it does with each new one you are blessed to have. Then comes the day your kids aren't kids anymore. They realize that you're a person too, with struggles, faults, shortcomings and occasional victories. But then you see something extraordinary. You see a little of you in your kids. A little of your personality. Your thoughts. Your actions. Your mannerisms. Google and listen to the song "Seein' my father in me" by Paul Overstreet. I hope you're like me and you smile a little when that happens. Sorry to my grown kids but you're still mine!!
The Bible is full of Dads. I don't think we ever really think of them as Dads though. Some are good. Some are not. Some are present. Some distant. Just like today. Even King David had his struggles. For tomorrow, think about Dads. Other peoples dads you know. Biblical Dads. I'm not sharing my scripture today, I want you to just think. And it is an interesting story I'll share. One of my favorite Bible stories that we seldom discuss. It has a very simple six word message that if us Dads can learn the rest is easy.
More is caught than is taught.
See you tomorrow!
